Brief
An installation celebrating 75 years of independence

For the 75th year of India's independence, the brief asked for an installation at a building or public space of cultural or historical importance, one that also responds to present-day urban issues and points towards a better-connected community.

Swatanya means independence. Shivaji Park, a gathering ground during the freedom struggle, is still the heart of its neighbourhood, but its edges hold interstitial dead spaces. One of these became the site. The pavilion leads visitors through the darkness of what the freedom fighters endured: its walls tell their stories, and the way out opens into light. With India's large young population in mind, it is meant to give young people a lasting connection to the sacrifices behind their freedom.

01Form

The form began as free-falling lines drawn to find an abstract, de-constructive curve. The lines were connected into a wide entrance, given meaning as they turned into a form, and finally tightened into an enclosed shell that opens from one end to the other.
